Neon is one of two noble gases that are less dense than air.
When exposed to electricity, neon will glow reddish-orange, which is quite visible from a significant distance. That kind of light almost does not scatter and is not subjected to atmospheric conditions, e.g. fog.
Due to its high cooling capacity, neon can be used to cool down superconducting materials.
